A recent study suggests that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing such treatments need to be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors believe the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened weight return.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced something activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is greater among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural management.
